This category is a key one in the cooling industry’s battle to reduce carbon emissions and it often produces the widest variety of different entries, with entrants from all across the industry demonstrating their approach to cutting carbon. It is especially gratifying to be able to award the top honour to a company operating in an area that is still under-appreciated — end of life recycling. Iceline Yorkshire has established a recycling facility dedicated to the particular needs of the supermarket refrigeration sector, helping major retail customers aim for best practice with disposal and compliant recycling of its old display cases. The judges particularly liked the way that a relatively small company has sought to embrace the circular economy, with a well-thought-out approach to the end of life of commercial refrigeration. It is all the more remarkable, given the fact that Iceline has been principally a refrigeration contractor, but elected to diversify into recycling to help meet a real customer need for F-Gas-compliant display case recycling facilities. The facility, which was set up with the support of major customer City Refrigeration, now is proudly able to deliver on its target of 100 per cent recycling of refrigeration display cases and refrigeration equipment. It processes the structural material and components itself and sends foam and refrigerant to further specialist processing. What the judges liked was that Iceline hasn’t rested on its laurels with the facility — it has engaged an Environmental Consultant to monitor best practice and compliance and to give training and advice to the site staff. ‘Really captured the principles of low-carbon achievement,’ the judges enthused.
